Sails

Performance is always an issue on a cruising sail boat. The owners remarks about this boat answer that question:

"I have owned "Isabella" a Gulf 32 for 6 yrs. and after much work we sailed her from BC, Canada to Mexico & sailed most of Mexico for the last 2+ years with a new main, 130 genoa w/ a mast mounted whisker pole. We keep up with most boats & excel over many of the lighter boats as the wind pipes up to 20+ as we can carry a lot of sail area. We've experienced winds in the high 40's & 14-16' seas off Oregon."

The main is controlled with a center main sheet and roller bearing slide car traveler. Five winches are fitted. Two single speed Lewmars on the mast (halyards), one single speed Lewmar self-tailing at the mainsheet and two Lewmar 43 two speed self-tailing on the jib sheets.

A telescoping whisker pole with adjustable pole fitting mast track is provided to control the 130 genoa. A new masthead Windex was fitted in 2010 when the mast was painted with epoxy, fitted with mast steps, new stainless wire rigging and new double braid running rigging.

The main and foresail were new in 2010 along with the sail covers. The rig

The Gulf 32 Pilothouse is a William Garden design, long keel motorsailer built by Capitol Yachts of Harbor City California in 1984. Capitol also built several different models of Neptune and Newport yachts. The Gulf 32 is intended for extended offshore cruising with an almost full keel, internal ballast and attached rudder. It is heavily built of fiberglass with 6,500 pounds internal ballast of iron shot and cement.

A modest, easily handled sail rig of 580 sq. ft. and a 33 foot mast provides good performance. Long passages at an average speed over 7 knots have been logged on this boat. The engine was replaced in 2010 and is a Kubota based Beta three cylinder diesel that is both smooth and relatively quiet in operation. Cruising speed under power is 6 knots with economy of 1/2 gallon of fuel per hour. The engine and related systems are easily accessible from above and all sides through lift off hatches in the floor of the galley/helm area which is a considerable improvement over the usual "engine buried under the cockpit" arrangement of most sail boats this size.

The current owner has added several custom features including the heavy SS rail system with bow and stern pulpits, an extended bow roller for the anchor, teak swim step and boarding ladder and a tubular SS arch over the cockpit to carry the wind generator, solar panels, outboard lift and antennas. The portals in the hull were replaced with solid SS framed, waterproof glass ports and forward skylight/hatch all with 3/8" safety glass also used on the new, aluminum framed windows installed in the pilot house.

A large cockpit aft and a wide stern with teak swim step and boarding ladder provide plenty of outdoors space for the crew. BottomSider cockpit cushions are fitted all around, new Sept 2009. The cockpit features three opening lockers in the seats with large storage areas. A SS arch over the aft of the cockpit carries the wind generator, three of the solar panels and antennas. It also features a hoist for the outboard and a rack for surfboards. In addition to the Sunbrella dodger forward, a removable canvas cover can provide shade and shelter over the entire cockpit. Cockpit steering is by folding tiller with engine controls, plotter, depth and radio available.

At anchor, sun covers can be deployed from the booms and rigging to provide shade for the entire deck. A fabric wind scoop attached to the forward, opening skylight assists ventilation. Phiphertex sun covers are provided for the windows and bimini.

Forward of the cockpit is a large companionway (triple door) down stairs to the galley/helm area of the pilot house. The interior is divided into three areas. First is the pilot house. To starboard of the central standing helm station is a sit down chart table, instruments and shelves for the navigator. Behind the chart table is a large quarter berth extending under the starboard cockpit seat. The inside steering station has engine controls, compass, radar and plotter which can also be viewed from the cockpit. Either helm station can be disengaged while using the other. The pilothouse/galley floor is tiger bamboo, installed May 2010.

The "U" shaped galley is on the port side of the pilot house sharing the 360 degree view through large windows with easy access to either up to the cockpit or down to the seating/table area. Galley equipment includes a Force 10, two burner stove/oven/broiler, new Dec 2009, and a Adler-Barbour CU100 refrigeration system, new Sep 2008 and serviced/recharged Sep 2012. A Moen Stone sink with American Standard Elite faucet was installed Nov 2007. An Engel MT27 AC/DC freezer was installed May 2008 and a Seaward 5700 six gallon SS water heater was installed Nov 2009. Two 2.5 gallon aluminum propane tanks are mounted on deck aft with a Marinetics remote switch in the galley, new Apr 2010. Hot and cold pressure water is supplied by a ShurFlo 4 gpm electric pump with a complete spare pump, new May 2010. Fresh water is also pumped with a foot pedal pump mounted below the sink, new Jan 2008. The owner also added a folding teak counter extension, teak pantry with shelving and a removable SS grab rail in front of the stove.

Cabin heat is provided by a Sure Marin 5000 BTU heater. Six Hella interior ventilation fans keep air moving.

Basic headroom in the interior is about 6'4" but including the raised pilot house over the lower seating area gives the impression of much more head room.

Forward and two steps down is the main cabin which has a full length settee berth on the port side and an "L" shaped dinette on the starboard. The interior cushions and upholstery were new Nov 2008. The custom teak dinette table (Mar 2009) stores out of the way against the bulkhead forward and folds down and out for serving. There are shelves and lockers above the berths and storage under the berths. The cabin is well lighted with ports on each side as well as the pilot house windows above. Ventilation is good with the opening doors to the cockpit, opening pilothouse windows and a forward opening skylight in the bow compartment which can be fitted with a large, fabric wind scoop. The raised pilothouse area flows into the main cabin with no bulkhead which provides an unusually open, spacious and well lit interior. The result is that the interior seems very large for a 32 foot boat.

Forward of the main cabin on the starboard side is a head compartment with grate floor, shelves and lockers. There is a sink and shower which is operated by either a foot pump or the pressurized water system. The toilet is a Lavac Zenith toilet with diaphragm pump which is virtually impossible to clog. A 15 gallon holding tank is fitted. Opposite the head compartment are storage lockers.

The forward (bow) cabin has a 6'+ "V" berth to the starboard side with surrounding shelves. The mattress is memory and Pincore foam, installed Oct 2009. To port is a shelf with drawers under. A vanity seat for dressing doubles as a step to the V berth. The hull interior is planked with teak and the cabin sole is teak and holly.

The entertainment system includes a JVC stereo system with an AM, FM and XM tuner so you can receive radio stations from anywhere no matter where you are. There is also a CD player, USB port, Ipod dock and Bose speakers in waterproof enclosures over the cockpit. A Sharp 13" flat screen TV and Magnavox DVD player with a dedicated 400 watt inverter provide video and there is a wifi booster + software.

Interior lighting includes 4 LED dome lights, Mar 2008 and 5 Hella flexible neck Halogen interior lights, Nov 2009.
